Jennifer is an avid outdoor adventurist. Mountain biking, hiking, and snowshoeing are what connect her to the outdoors and satisfy her need for challenges.
She tends to be fearless.
Steep wooded trails, hiking above the treeline, and snowshoeing in deep snow pack are her terrains of choice.
It’s a late summer day. Jennifer is on a well-planned, multi-day hiking adventure with two friends. They are working their way up a steep wooded trail in the Central Rocky Mountains that will take them above the tree line and eventually to one of the highest peaks in the area.
They are about to break the treeline when the group decides to make camp for the night, and then head for the peak first in the morning. The location will facilitate an easy hike up to the peak and back the following day.
After reviewing their trail plans for the next day, the group retires early to get a good sleep in preparation for a full day of hiking.
Jennifer experiences a somewhat restless sleep. In what had started out as a quiet night, a strong breeze picked up, causing the nylon tent to slap against the support frame.
Daylight eventually arrives and marks the start of what should be an adventuresome day hiking up to the peak and taking in the breathtaking view from what will feel like the top of the world.
Jennifer notices a remarkable quietness as she prepares to exit her tent. She wonders if her friends have awakened yet.
Dressed and ready to go she starts to unzip the opening of the tent. Immediately, cold air rushes through the barely unzipped opening of the tent. She finds it odd to feel the coldness of the air given how warm it was the day before.
She turns to grab her backpack and then quickly unzips the doorway the rest of the way open.
Jennifer is momentarily paralyzed by the scene in front of the tent doorway. She gasps as she steps outside.
She is in a wide-open, perfectly flat snowfield with nothing to be seen as far as she can see. In all directions, nothing…
She quickly spins around only to see she is alone.
No sign of her friends.
No tracks in the snow.
