She Paused To Step Outside Of Herself

Who is it that she sees…

It is a pleasant spring day as Allison pauses while taking a walk along the trail next to the stream running full from the snow melt in the hills above.

Somewhat mesmerized by the sparkling sunlight reflecting on the rushing water, she closes her eyes and allows her inner self to step outside of her physical self for a moment.

In a semi-meditative state, she looks back from where she stands to consider who it is that she sees.

Just like blinds on your windows, there are shields in place to hide who you really are. Those looking from the outside never see beyond the blinds.

Allison ponders for a moment, wondering if she likes the view from the outside.

She knows the real Allison, who has stepped outside, is looking at what everyone else sees. She becomes unsettled at what she is observing.

She wants to scream, “This is not me!”

Allison knows she has been trapped and hidden for nearly her whole life. Those who surround her have never seen the real her.

It is this moment that she senses an opportunity to eradicate the ugly side of her that everyone has had to deal with.

Then, in a moment of stark suddenness, her outer self looks up from the stream and defiantly stares back at her in denial.

With a fit of desperation, she attempts to rejoin her inner self with her outer self, to take control, be who she really is, and wants others to see.

Her attempt is futile.

It becomes a full-scale battle. Neither side is giving in.

Losing a sense of her surroundings while battling to gain control of who she really is, Allison tumbles into the ice-cold water of the rushing stream.

In an instant, Allison sees herself floating above the stream, watching her outer shell floating lifelessly away, consumed by the turbulence.
