Water drop collisions are all about the timing of the event.
The number of variables that can impact the outcome of your image is mind-boggling.
Timing of the water drop is the primary component of the technique that creates the collision.

In the above image, the second drop is on the way down and about to meet up with the original drop that is rebounding back out of the water container.

And here the two drops initially meet.

After the initial contact, it then becomes a matter of timing to catch the various stages of water dispersion as a result of the collision.
